56709 is in Long Island City, Queens, tucked behind Gulp, the same Taiwanese restaurant that conceals its sister bar 929. The name comes from Junko Ohashi's 1984 Japanese city pop song "Telephone Number," and everything about the bar is an extension of that reference: neon, vinyl, 1980s Japan reconstructed in a basement in Queens.

The cocktail menu is built around Japanese pop culture figures and flavors. Junko's Old Fashioned uses persimmon and chestnut. Ryuichi's Negroni adds yuzu and sencha. Mariya's Whisky Sour brings in barley tea and kombu. There are anime-inspired drinks named for Pokemon, Arale, and Ranma. The specificity of the references is part of the appeal: this is a room for people who know exactly what it's about.

Opened in June 2025 as the natural companion to 929, which celebrates Cantopop, 56709 extends the project to Japanese city pop of the same era. The two bars together make an argument for cocktail rooms built around real cultural passions rather than generic nostalgia.
