929 opened in Long Island City in May 2023, behind a curtain inside Gulp, a Taiwanese restaurant. The bar was built as a celebration of Cantopop and Mandopop, the Cantonese and Mandarin pop music from the 1980s and 1990s that shaped a generation of the Chinese diaspora. Posters of Faye Wong and other Hong Kong artists cover the walls, and every cocktail on the menu is named after a hit song from that era. The drinks use Chinese and Taiwanese ingredients and flavors and are priced at the standard New York $18.

In 2025 the bar moved to Midtown Manhattan's Hue House, expanding its reach while maintaining the same concept. The sister bar, 56709, opened in Long Island City in 2025 with a similar mission but oriented around Japanese city pop of the same period.

The two bars together form a coherent project: serious cocktail rooms built around the specific nostalgia of Asian pop culture in a city that doesn't have enough of that represented.
