The Woo Woo

Rating: 4.4 Price: $$ 266 W 47th St Website Yelp Instagram

The Woo Woo is beneath The Mean Fiddler on West 47th Street in Times Square, and its entrance involves walking through a vintage adults-only shop stocked with authentic 1980s magazines before passing through a red curtain and a bookcase mounted with VCR players. The whole thing is a reconstruction of pre-Disneyfied Times Square, when the neighborhood was genuinely seedy rather than carefully managed, and the bar commits to that aesthetic without flinching.

The cocktail program is better than the entrance would suggest is strictly necessary. Spicy mezcal drinks, herbaceous gin cocktails, and smoky old fashioned riffs are the kinds of things on the menu. A buzzer at street level gets you in; the password is on the website.

Open Tuesday through Sunday starting at five. The combination of strong drinks and a theatrical entrance that has actual cultural reference behind it makes The Woo Woo one of the more interesting rooms in a neighborhood that is not known for interesting rooms.
