The Garret is upstairs from a Five Guys on Bleecker Street in the West Village, which is the part of the description that gets everyone's attention. You walk into the fast food restaurant, go to the back, find the staircase, and head up. What's up there is a loft bar with tufted couches, cozy nooks, a wall of windows overlooking the street below, and a cocktail list that includes things like a matcha green tea Tom Collins riff and a chocolate habanero tequila drink.

The two businesses have a genuine relationship: you're allowed to bring your Five Guys order upstairs and eat it with your cocktail. It started in 2014 and has been the arrangement ever since. Nobody in the West Village seems to think this is strange anymore.

It's a proper bar with good cocktails, not just a gimmick attached to a burger place. But the burger-and-cocktail combination is hard to beat on a Friday night when you're not sure what you want to do with yourself.
