Father’s Study

Rating: 4.4 62 W 9th St Website Yelp Instagram

Father's Study is hidden on the second floor of & Son Steakeasy, a restaurant operating out of a 190-year-old Greenwich Village townhouse at 62 West 9th Street. You get there through a closet door and up a narrow red staircase, which is either charming or disorienting depending on how familiar you are with the building. The room itself is lined with old books and bottles, furnished with lounge chairs, and lit low enough to make it feel like a different era entirely.

In the 1960s, when the space was known as The Lion, a teenage Barbara Streisand sang in one of the back rooms before she was signed. The current speakeasy calls back to the building's Prohibition-era past, and there's a second bookcase wall that opens onto another concealed room used for private events when the main bar fills up. The cocktail program fits the setting: precise, a little theatrical, and anchored in the classics without being reverent about them.

Getting a table at Father's Study requires going through & Son. If you're already planning to eat, that's straightforward enough. If you just want the bar, it's worth calling ahead.
