Allegory
Allegory is a first-of-its-kind cocktail bar blending art, literature, social good, craft cocktails, and hospitality at the Eaton Hotel. Hidden behind a nondescript door in the Progress Library, the bar features a stunning one-of-a-kind mural by Erik Thor Sandberg depicting civil rights icon Ruby Bridges as Alice from Alice in Wonderland. The first menu, "Down the Rabbit Hole," cleverly divides drinks into 12 chapters mirroring the original novel. The current menu, "Banned in DC," released in February 2025, continues Ruby's story 20 years later as she navigates a post-apocalyptic Washington where her historical narrative faces censorship. The artistry and storytelling elevate the cocktail experience beyond drinks into something literary and meaningful. The bar earned an Outstanding Bar semifinalist nod from James Beard, landed at number 45 on North America's 50 Best Bars, won Best Cocktail Menu, and received Best U.S. Hotel Bar and U.S. Bartender of the Year finalist honors from the Spirited Awards. Every element, from the artwork to the menu design to the craft cocktails, tells a story. This is where social consciousness meets mixology in one of DC's most thoughtfully crafted bar experiences.
