Speakeasy Tavern
Gil's Speakeasy Tavern has been a Portland institution since 1939, and they take their speakeasy concept seriously. Located at 609 1/2 SE Taylor Street with no sign to announce its presence, this dive bar is hidden in plain sight. Walk in and you'll find a cozy two-room hangout complete with a pool table and shuffleboard, where the ceiling is filled with years of chalked comments, drawings, and signatures from patrons. Gil's is famous for its full kitchen pumping out serious house-made food, including a turkey dinner on Tuesdays and prime rib on Thursdays. With 12 taps featuring everything from cheap classics like PBR to craft selections, Gil's proves that a true speakeasy doesn't need a fancy facade to earn its reputation.
