tán is on East 49th Street in Midtown East, a coastal Mexican restaurant from chef-restaurateur Richard Sandoval that takes Tulum and the Yucatán as its primary reference points. The main dining room serves smoked entrées, ceviches, and sharing plates. One floor down is lúm, a mezcal speakeasy that operates as a distinct space within the same address.

The lúm bar is purpose-built for the mezcal and tequila program, which runs to a substantial list of both spirits alongside cocktails that use them well. The Shaman's Tán Mezcalita and Mercado Margarita are signatures across both floors. The underground space has a different energy than the restaurant above, quieter and more intimate, suited for pre- or post-dinner drinks or for people who came specifically for the mezcal.

Weekend brunch adds bottomless bubbly cocktails to the picture. Tán occupies a corner of Midtown that has more serious restaurants than it does serious cocktail programs, which gives the lúm bar a clear purpose.
