Ye's Apothecary 夜莺
Ye's Apothecary is on Orchard Street on the Lower East Side, in the territory between Chinatown and the rest of the neighborhood. The character 夜莺 means nightingale. Miss Ye opened the bar in June 2022 after traveling across Asia and wanted to bring the apothecary aesthetic she'd encountered there into a New York cocktail bar.
The decor is vintage medicine bottles, herbs and spices on shelves, dark moody lighting, the visual language of a 19th-century Chinese medicine shop reinterpreted as a speakeasy. The cocktails use Chinese herbal botanicals as structural ingredients rather than decoration. The Earl Grey Gimlet, the Monkey King, the Bird's Nest, and the Red Sorghum are the drinks that come up most in reviews. They're Sichuan-influenced in flavor profile alongside the herbal components, which is a specific combination that works.
Food is small-plate Asian tapas. Open Tuesday through Sunday starting at five-thirty, with brunch on Sundays. It was one of the better-reviewed new openings in the Lower East Side when it launched and has remained consistent.
