On the Rocks Speakeasy
On the Rocks is a whiskey bar on 10th Avenue in Hell's Kitchen with exposed brick, dim lighting, and Frank Sinatra on the speakers. Owner Howard Ostrofsky opened it about fifteen years ago and chose the neighborhood deliberately because Hell's Kitchen has always had a strong drinking culture and the bar fits into that without apology.
The whiskey selection runs to over eighty varieties including rare bottles, Japanese single malts, bourbon, rye, and Irish, with over sixty beers on the bottle list as well. The concrete bar is where most people end up. The space is small enough that conversations happen whether you planned them or not.
It doesn't have a hidden entrance or Prohibition-era history behind it. What it does have is consistency: the same bar doing the same thing well for over a decade in a neighborhood that appreciates exactly that.
