Laissez Faire

Rating: 3.3 Price: $$$ 10 Theatre Alley Website Yelp Instagram

Laissez Faire is at the end of Theatre Alley in the Financial District, a cobblestone passage that most people who work in the neighborhood don't know exists. A purple neon sign marks the entrance. The building is the 1883 Temple Court structure, one of the older commercial buildings still standing in lower Manhattan, and the bar takes something from that age even in its modern form.

The cocktail program emphasizes martinis and refined spirits for early evening. As the night progresses the room shifts toward DJ-driven music through a Danley Labs four-point sound system, which is a level of audio investment that signals the later hours are taken seriously. The food side handles elevated small plates.

A bar in a cobblestone alley inside a building from 1883 that nobody knows is there is a combination that doesn't require much additional justification.
