Hidden Tiger

Rating: 4.1 Price: $$ 13th St & 14th St, 212 Avenue A Website Yelp Instagram

Hidden Tiger is on Avenue A in the East Village, concealed inside Cafe Joah, a coffee shop. The speakeasy is Art Deco in design with a jungle influence, which sounds like an unusual combination but works in a room this small. The bar seats around ten to fifteen people at most, and reservations are strongly recommended.

The cocktail program has Korean-inspired elements and includes sake-based drinks alongside more standard options. The food menu leans into Korean small plates: spicy tteokbokki with honey and sesame, kimchi arancini. The combination of East Village speakeasy aesthetics and Korean-inflected food and drinks reflects the neighborhood's character more than it would in most other parts of the city.

Live music comes through some nights. Closed Monday and Tuesday. It's one of the smaller rooms on this list, which makes it feel more like being let into someone's private space than going to a bar.
