George Bang Bang
George Bang Bang is in Koreatown on East 30th Street, at the back of Okdongsik, a Korean restaurant. The entrance is a disguised wall. The bar behind it is shadowy and low-lit with dark wood, oil lamps, red-lit shelving, vintage trunks for tables, and a record player spinning big band jazz. The contrast between the casual Korean restaurant out front and the moody cocktail room in the back is deliberate and works better in person than it sounds on paper.
The cocktail menu is built around ingredient pairings that take Korean pantry items seriously. The Old Boy uses mezcal with Korean pear shrub. Emma's Wife brings gin together with pineapple, beet, cucumber, and lemon. The Juliet of the Spirits has fig-infused mezcal, pandan, and Campari. The drink names are all film titles, which gives the menu its own internal logic.
Reservations available through Resy. Open Sunday through Tuesday until one in the morning, Wednesday through Saturday until two.
