Rating: 4.1 Price: $$ 134 Eldridge St, New York, NY 10002, United States Website Yelp Instagram

Attaboy is at 134 Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side, in the same space that Sasha Petraske's Milk & Honey occupied before it moved. Milk & Honey won best cocktail bar in the world in 2008. Attaboy, opened by Milk & Honey alumni Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy in 2012, won best bar in North America in 2022. The lineage matters because it's one of the more direct lines of succession in the city's cocktail history.

There is no sign, no menu, and no list of drinks to order from. You ring a bell at the door marked "AB." If there's room, you go in. Once seated, a bartender asks what flavors and spirits you're drawn to and builds you something from there. The cocktails that result are almost always better than what you would have ordered from a menu. Ross created the Penicillin and the Paper Plane; McIlroy invented the Greenpoint. These drinks are now made in bars around the world, and they were developed here.

Open seven days a week from five in the afternoon. Limited reservations available, otherwise walk-in.
