Angel’s Share
Angel's Share opened in 1993 in the East Village and spent the next three decades influencing almost every serious cocktail bar that came after it. The Japanese approach to bartending, the quiet rules around seating and noise, the precision in every drink, the refusal to rush anyone but also the absolute refusal to let people stand around taking up space. It was doing all of that before most of the current generation of speakeasies existed.
The original East Village location closed, and in June 2023 Angel's Share reopened at 45 Grove Street in the West Village. The famous angel mural that anchored the original space was restored and brought to the new room. The entrance is an unmarked door. There's a short descent. The room holds about 65 people.
No reservations. No standing. Groups of more than four are generally not seated together. The drinks are flawlessly made and have always been worth the rules that come with ordering them. Angel's Share has been on the North America's 50 Best Bars list, which is accurate but undersells how significant this place has been to the broader story of the craft cocktail world.
