Under the Volcano
Under the Volcano is a Día de Los Muertos-themed neighborhood bar that has been serving drinks and food since 1989, making it one of Houston's pioneering craft cocktail establishments. Named after the Malcolm Lowry novel set in Cuernavaca on the Mexican holiday of the day of the dead, the bar honors Latin American culture and flavor. Located between Kirby and Greenbriar on Bissonnet, Under the Volcano emphasizes freshly squeezed juices and fresh herbs in all cocktails, rejecting shortcuts. Signature drinks include the Strawberry Basil Margarita, Paloma, Añejo Old Fashioned, and Caipirinha. The menu features empanadas, in-house smoked salmon, steak night, Sunday brunch, tacos, and Mexican favorites like made-to-order guacamole, queso, and carne guisada. With daily happy hour, weekly live music, and rotating specials, Under the Volcano remains a beloved destination that celebrates craft cocktails, culture, and community in equal measure.
