The Green Mill opened in 1907 on Broadway in Uptown. "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn, one of Al Capone's lieutenants, became a part-owner in 1926. Capone had a regular booth on the west side of the bar, positioned so he could see both entrances at once. There are tunnels beneath the building that coal deliveries came through and that allegedly doubled as bootlegging routes during Prohibition.

It's cash only. The cover charge varies by night but typically runs $15 to $20 on top of drinks. Live jazz plays every night of the week without exception. Sunday nights include a long-running poetry slam before the jazz set takes over. The acoustics are good, the performers are serious, and the crowd comes to listen. Show up early if you want a seat.
