The Drifter
The building that houses Green Door Tavern on Orleans Street has been standing since 1872, making it the oldest wooden bar structure in the city. What most people walking in for a beer don't realize is that there's a room underneath it that's been running since Prohibition and, by most accounts, hasn't changed much since.
To get to The Drifter, you go through Green Door, head toward the back like you're looking for the bathroom, and at the bottom of the stairs there's a door that looks like a shelf. Knock on it. It opens.
Inside there are 40 seats, a stage, and a cocktail menu printed on Tarot cards. A different set of cards gets pulled each night, so the drinks you see on your visit are unlikely to be the ones available next time. The entertainment changes nightly too: burlesque, contortion acts, magic. It runs Wednesday through Saturday with a $6 cover when there's a show.
The building also has a secret escape door above the booths, discovered during renovations. It was used during Prohibition raids. Everything about the place is exactly what it sounds like.
