Punch House

Rating: 4.0 Price: $$ Chicago Website Yelp Instagram

Punch House is in the basement of Thalia Hall in Pilsen, a Czech opera house built in 1891 by John Dusek, an Eastern European immigrant. The main venue above it hosts concerts. The basement was converted into a bar that runs as its own thing.

The concept is punch: seasonal drinks served by the glass, by the carafe, or by the bowl, rotating throughout the year. The room has wood-paneled walls, a fish tank, and a DJ booth, which accurately describes 1975 rec room energy. You get to it through Dusek's restaurant on the ground floor. The building does most of the work.
