New Orleans
The Owl Bar
The Owl Bar glows with the legacy of Prohibition itself, where 1903 elegance and clever speakeasy codes once meant survival. The two 30-pound plaster owls on the backbar—Sherry Belle and John Eager Howard—used to blink their electric eyes when whiskey was available and the coast was clear, a language of resistance written in stained glass. Today, those owls still watch from their high perches, sometimes still winking, presiding over craft cocktails and upscale gastropub fare in Mount Vernon's most beautifully haunted corner.
